Alternative certification programs that let college graduates earn their teaching certificates while teaching full-time in Chicago Public Schools.

The DePaul University Urban Teaching Corps is a one-year program. Students take graduate courses over the summers and on Saturdays, and DePaul helps place them as full-time provisional teachers. Students are paid less than regular full-time Chicago teachers, but they get a discount on DePaul's tuition. Participants in the 1999-2000 school year will earn approximately $24,500 and pay $9,900 in tuition. Call program coordinator Kathy Vandlik at (773) 325-4282

The Golden Apple Teacher Education Program (GATE) is a one-year program that features training administered by award-winning classroom teachers and Northwestern University faculty. Interns receive full teaching salaries and pay $12,000 tuition for the program. Call Dom Belmonte, the Golden Apple Foundation's director of teacher preparation, at (312) 407-0006, ext. 110.

The Inner-City Teaching Corps (ICTC) places college graduates in Chicago parochial schools, after summer training provided in collaboration with GATE. ICTC teachers receive free room, board and health coverage plus a small cash stipend. They commit to serving for at least two years. Call Elizabeth Russo at (312) 579-0150
