Important Facts to Know About the Year of Internship Teaching

1) During our one-year internship, we are not under contract to the
school district, nor are we on the tenure track.  Therefore we are
not subject to the district's salary schedule.  This is why we can
expect to be paid at the bachelor's level during the internship, even
if we already have a master's in our subject area.  The salary
schedule doesn't apply to us.

1a) However, the law does require the school district to provide us
with benefits during the internship.

See http://www.isbe.net/profdevelopment/PDFs/sec21-5c.pdf for the
section of the Illinois School code that spells out the alternative
certification laws.

2) Because of our status during the internship as a non-contract
teacher, we are not guaranteed to get credit for a year of teaching
when we look for a permanent job.  A school district can choose to
give us credit for that year, but there is no legal obligation.
